Soil Investigations & Ground Improvement Techniques in Infrastructure Development, 05 – 08 September, 2017

INTRODUCTION

Ground improvement, in a broad sense, is the change of any property of soil and treatment of ground so that the soil strata may be strengthened / improved to serve better for engineering applications. Variety of ground improvement techniques involving the physical, mechanical and/or chemical processes have been successfully implemented all over the world to overcome the problems caused by the treacherous sub-grade/foundation soils. Methods such as Preloading, Plastic Vertical Drains (PVDs), Stone Columns/Granular Piles, Vibro-techniques, Compaction Piling, Grouting, Heavy Tamping, etc. would be described and analysed. Methods appropriate for expansive soils would also be covered. OBJECTIVE Through this programme on “Soil Investigations & Ground Improvement Techniques in Infrastructure Development”, it is proposed to discuss different issues related to requirements for ground improvement, various techniques of improvement, water table lowering, compaction, tamping, addition of lime, cement and bitumen, gravel and sand columns, reinforced earth, soil replacement techniques, Geosynthetics and ultimately come out with appropriate techniques for different field conditions.
