Civil and Transportation Engineering department uses the latest tools, technologies and scientific principles to create advanced transportation systems. These systems can then facilitate faster and safer movement of traffic on roads, railways and airways. Any product or system that moves people and goods from one place to another can fall under the scope of transportation engineering

Most civil / transportation engineers are employed by government and state agencies and private consulting firms, but some also work as teachers and researchers in colleges and universities. These engineers are responsible for the safety, efficiency and economic viability of the transportation systems they design, build, maintain and supervise.

The key areas where Civil / Transportation Engineers do research and design new solutions include

  • Pavements
  • Highways
  • Seaports
  • Bridges
  • Airports
  • Public Transit Systems
  • Roads
  • Railroads,etc.
  • Area of Expertise

    • The division has imparted training for various Government Departments like Roads and Buildings, PWD, Municipal Corporations, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Authorities, Ports, Housing Boards, GHMC, Chhattisgarh Housing Board, CIDCO, Rites, SCCL, Railways and Military Engineering Service, Border Road and Defense Studies.
    • The division also organized In-House training programmes to both Public and Private Sectors, State Tourism Development Corporations, NBCC, LIC, DSIIDC, Jindal Steels, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., SEW Constructions, Meenakshi Group, Ramky Group, Lanco Infra, Aparna Constructions & Estates Pvt. Ltd., ONGC, ISRO and Indu Projects, etc.
    • As part of the promotion of training amongst member countries of International Network for Professional Engineers Development Institutes (INPEDI), training programmes on “Maintenance of Infrastructure” is being conducted by the division on a regular basis both in India &; abroad under ‘UNESCO’ contribution.

Construction materials are important because they determine the strength, durability, and safety of buildings and structures. The right materials ensure that buildings can withstand various forces. Testing on Materials gives proof for the quality of materials indicating it meets or it fails the desired properties as called for in the specifications requirements. There can be quality assurance without adequate quality control at the source or manufacturer or at construction, therefore testing is a tool for measuring quality control in project implementation

Because of the involvement of several stake holders, different types of contracts and conditions have made this task more complex. It is the process of generating, executing, and monitoring contracts. This can include negotiating terms, drafting documents, and ensuring that both parties meet their obligations. The projects are being subjected to cost and time overruns because of disputes arising and continuous issues in the projects. Irrespective of the type of project, contracts happen to be the main of all the relationships that an organization develops with important stakeholders like partners, suppliers, customers etc. Even though, Contracts are the most central aspect in organization's functioning, they are the neglected element of the Procurement Cycle and hence lead to delays, disputes and disagreements.

The maintenance planning within the urban road infrastructure management is a complex problem from both the management and techno economic aspects. In order to get a surface devoid of wires and pipelines, trenching is regularly performed in urban areas- in fact, it is done all year long. Numerous government and non-government initiatives that need trenching are now underway in urban areas. In order to ensure that the city runs efficiently, they are mostly done to establish sewage lines, water pipes, gas lines, and underground telecommunication networks. For any of the above-mentioned reasons, the majority of city roadways are dug. Even many diggings were done several times. The functional condition of the roadways has gotten worse as a result of repeated trenching. The stability of the soil's inner layer is destroyed by frequent trenching. This training program will deals with the reasons and impact of digging on urban roads and its management and also failures of restoration of digging.

A highway pavement is a structure consisting of superimposed layers of processed materials above the natural soil sub-grade, whose primary function is to distribute the applied vehicle loads to the sub-grade. The pavement structure should be able to provide a surface of acceptable riding quality, adequate skid resistance, favorable light reflecting characteristics, and low noise pollution. The ultimate aim is to ensure that the transmitted stresses due to wheel load are sufficiently reduced, so that they will not exceed bearing capacity of the sub-grade. Improper design of pavements leads to early failure of pavements affecting the riding quality also.
