The mining industry has a reputation for being a potentially risky profession, with safety & health challenges and hence it is important for mining organizations to have protection system in place accordingly. Safety shall always be top most priority and safety strategy shall be ingrained in mission statement. A well-defined safety policy is to be framed to ensure safety. All operations, systems and processes are to be meticulously planned and designed with due regards to safety, conservation, sustainable development and clean environment. Safety and Health Management System brings together the policies and procedures required to effectively mitigate the risks associated with the opencast mining operations. A strong relationship exists between a well-constructed and maintained haul roads and safe, efficient mining operations. Well designed and maintained haul roads and tyre care are the key to minimizing truck haulage on-road hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity

Non–renewable minerals are still the main energy resource for India. However, mining of minerals, mainly through opencast technology, for fulfilling energy demands and to boost the national economy, have to be on a sustainable basis. Therefore, sustainable development of mining industry considering effective utilization and conservation of organizational resources, minimizing environmental impact and above all economic viability through modernization, digitization technological innovations are vital for future prospects. It also requires people and the volition commitment of these people. The economic viability of mine is dependent on careful planning and management to avoid any hazardous events which results not only in destruction, economic losses and environmental damage but also affects safety and productivity resulting in unaffordable losses in terms of men & machinery, mineral assets and thus financial losses.

Drilling & Blasting is still the most popular and predominant but challenging rock excavation technique in mining, civil projects even today, either to break ore/mineral or waste rock or for any civil infrastructure development. Thus, blasting technology is evolving continuously. The engineering of drilling & blasting operations needs clearly defined objectives, materials, skilled techniques, and understanding of the rock properties, explosive-rock interaction and fragmentation mechanism. It is important to achieve the desired degree of fragmentation commensurate to the excavation machines deployed and thus to reduce costs and unwanted side effects such as misfires, blasting fumes, fly rocks, noise, air & ground vibration, air- blast, oversized boulders, side-tear, back-break or formation of toe. Automation and Digitization solutions have the potential to improve productivity while enhancing workers' safety and addressing any social challenges.
